Energy: powering a cleaner, smarter future

Energy projects explore how we produce, use and save energy, and how we can do it better. Study what we use today, then look for cleaner alternatives for tomorrow.

What can your project look at?

⚙️ Power generation How efficient are classic power stations, such as hydroelectric, nuclear and coal plants?
🛢️ Fuels & raw materials How are fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) and other raw materials used, and at what cost?
🚆 Transport How efficient are everyday vehicles, how often are they used, and what causes traffic jams in your area?
➜ Above all, look for alternative energy sources and greener ways to travel.

Sub-categories

☀️

Renewable Energy

Energy from natural sources that never run out: sunlight, wind, tides, flowing water and heat from inside the Earth. Includes solar, wind, hydroelectric and geothermal power, plus biofuels for transport.

Idea: How does the angle of a solar panel affect its power output?
🌱

Bioenergy

Renewable energy made from organic matter such as plants, crops and waste. It can be burned directly or turned into liquid and gas fuels, known as biofuels.

Idea: Which type of food waste produces the most biogas?
🏭

Non-renewable Energy: Clean & Green Advances

Coal, oil and gas took millions of years to form and will eventually run out. Focus on clean and green improvements that reduce the harm fossil fuels do to the environment.

Idea: Can a simple filter reduce smoke emissions from burning fuel?
⚡

Clean Energy Technology

Technology designed to cause as little environmental harm as possible: electric and hybrid vehicles, fuel cells, hydrogen, cleaner-burning fuels, zero-emission systems and pollution reduction.

Idea: Build and test a small hydrogen fuel cell car.
💡

Energy Efficiency

Doing the same job with less energy. Better efficiency cuts both costs and environmental impact.

Idea: Compare the energy used by LED and traditional light bulbs.
🔌

Energy Conservation

Saving energy by using less of it, usually by changing our habits and behaviour.

Idea: How much energy does your school waste on devices left on standby?
🏛️

Energy Business & Policy

How energy businesses and government policies develop, and what actions could tackle growing energy problems and their impact on the environment.

Idea: Propose a policy to cut energy use in your local community.

Efficiency or conservation? Spot the difference

💡 Efficiency

Same result, less energy.
Swap an old bulb for an LED: the room is just as bright.

🔌 Conservation

Use less, need less.
Switch the light off when you leave the room.
