Your project starts here. Four stages. One stage at the Olympiad.
Pick a topic you care about, test your idea, make sense of the results and share your story with judges from around the world.
The 4 Stages of Your Project
Click each stage. Work through them in order.
Stage 1 · Initiate & Plan
Choose a topic you care about and are good at.
- Start with a question, problem or idea that genuinely interests you.
- Pick the IGO category that fits it best.
- Write one clear aim: what do you want to find out, build or show?
- Plan your time, materials and any support you need.
Do this now
Write your project question in one sentence. If you can't, narrow it down until you can.
Stage 2 · Perform & Record
Test your idea and see what happens.
- Carry out your experiment, build your prototype or create your piece.
- Record everything: data, photos, notes, dates and changes you make.
- Repeat tests where you can so your results are reliable.
- Keep a project log. Judges value evidence of process.
Do this now
Start a logbook today, digital or paper, and date every entry.
Stage 3 · Analyse & Interpret
Reflect on your results and why they happened.
- Organise your results into tables, charts or clear summaries.
- Look for patterns, and explain what caused them.
- Be honest about limitations and what you would improve.
- Link your conclusion back to your original question.
Do this now
Finish this sentence: "My results show that… because…"
Stage 4 · Exhibit & Experience
Share your project story.
- Prepare your abstract, poster or presentation.
- Practise explaining your project clearly in a few minutes.
- Get ready for judges' questions: know your method and your "why".
- Enjoy meeting participants from across the world.
Do this now
Explain your project out loud to someone in 60 seconds. Then do it again.
